Nokia and Vodafone buddy up for Web services

Nokia and Vodafone have announced a deal that will see the handset maker's mobile Internet services platform cropping up on Vodafone handsets in Europe.

Under the agreement, Nokia's Ovi platform -- which includes music, maps, gaming and social networking -- is to be introduced on Vodafone handsets from next year. Nokia will also produce a number of handsets exclusively for Vodafone.

The new platform will offer both Vodafone and Ovi services side by side, including both companies' own music stores.

No details on an Australian launch are available yet, according to Nokia. "Of course, we are in discussions with Vodafone locally on mutually beneficial opportunities for the future and we will announce them in due course," a spokesperson for the handset maker said.

When Nokia first launched Ovi, some industry watchers questioned whether the handset manufacturer would be able to sell mobile Internet services whilst not risking the ire of its operator customers -- who are themselves trying to exploit such services to drive up non-SMS data revenue.

Ovum analyst John Delaney said the Vodafone deal will come as a significant boon to the platform.

"Of all the European operators, Vodafone is in the best position to be able to embrace the Ovi brand without damaging its own. Vodafone has invested heavily in building and marketing itself as a content-services brand, since launching Vodafone live! in late 2002. Of all the operator portal brands launched around that time Vodafone live! is now clearly the strongest. As a result, Vodafone is able to encompass other strong brands without the risk of putting its own brand in the shade," he said in a research note.

Vodafone has announced a series of content deals with big Internet brands in the course of the year, including agreements to put Google Maps, MySpace and YouTube on its mobiles.

Vodafone is not the first operator to take on Ovi: Nokia announced a pact with Spanish operator Telefonica Moviles earlier this year.

'Internet services disruption'
Ozzie memo: 'Internet services disruption'
The Internet Services Disruption

It is an exciting time, as we're at the beginning of the biggest product cycle in the company's history. In a week we ship new versions of Visual Studio, SQL Server and BizTalk Server. Later this month we ship Xbox 360. Next year we have a double barrelled release of our two largest products with Windows Vista and Office "12". It's a great time for customers, our partners, and for those at Microsoft who have put so much of themselves into these products.

But we bring these innovations to market at a time of great turbulence and potential change in the industry. This isn't the first time of such great change: we've needed to reflect upon our core strategy and direction just about every five years. Such changes are inevitable because of the progressive and dramatic evolution of computing and communications technology, because of resultant changes in how our customers use and apply that technology, and because of the continuous emergence of competitors with new approaches and perspectives.

In 1990, there was actually a question about whether the graphical user interface had merit. Apple amongst others valiantly tried to convince the market of the GUI's broad benefits, but the non-GUI Lotus 1-2-3 and WordPerfect had significant momentum. But Microsoft recognised the GUI's transformative potential, and committed the organisation to pursuit of the dream -- through investment in applications, platform and tools -- based on a belief that the GUI would dramatically expand and democratise computing.

When we reflected upon our dreams just five years later in 1995, the impetus for our new centre of gravity came from the then-nascent Web. With a clear view upon the challenges and opportunities it presented, the entire company pivoted to focus on the Internet to pursue that 'fully connected' dream with support for Internet standards throughout our product line: a Web browser, server and development tools, and a service in MSN that was transformed into a Web portal. Many things we developed in that era continue to fuel the growth of today's Internet: the technologies of AJAX -- DHTML and XMLHTTP -- were created in 1998 and used in products such as OWA.

In 2000, in the waning days of the dot com bubble, we yet again reflected on our strategy and refined our direction. After taking a more deliberative look at the Internet and its implications for software, we came to the conclusion that the Internet would go beyond browsing and should support programmability on a global scale. We observed that certain aspects of our most fundamental platform -- the tools and services that developers use when building their software -- would not likely satisfy the emerging security and interoperability requirements of the Internet. So we embarked upon .NET, a transformative new generation of the platform and tools built around managed code, the XML format and Web services programming model. At the time, it was a risky bet to build natively around XML, but this bet paid off handsomely and .NET has become the most popular development environment in the world.

Broadband Internet
What is broadband internet and why would you want it

Broadband internet is basically the ability to use the internet at high speeds. High speed internet allows you to browse web pages quicker, and download images, music, and movies quicker. The biggest advantage being that you don't have to wait around for content to download you receive them in a few seconds to a few minutes where as if you have an old dial up modem internet you would have to wait hours, even days for music and movie files to download.

There are currently two main types of broadband internet available in Australia, most large Internet Service Providers (ISPs) offer both or one or the other. One type of broadband is called ADSL, this type of broadband can use your current home phone land line to connect to the internet but you do not have to dialup each time, internet is always connected and on. Also with ADSL you can call people on your phone and chat at the same time the Internet is on even though they are using the same land line, unlike dialup where you cannot talk and use Internet at the same time. The other type of internet is called Cable, Cable internet uses the same fiber optic lines as pay TV such as Foxtel, you can watch the pay TV and use internet at the same time also.

So which do you choose ADSL or Cable internet? Both ADSL and Cable offer very high speeds of broadband so neither really out performs the other; the maximum speeds really depend on which package you pay for from the Internet Service Provider (ISP), the more you pay the higher speeds and higher download limit you will have. Having said that it then really depends on where you are currently living, most places have phone lines installed already so ADSL is nearly always an option where as Cable is not always available.

From experience I would have noticed that when downloading once in a while Cable does outperform ADSL that is not saying that ADSL is slow it is far from it but most of the time they are the same. If you don??t move around much and you have the ability to get Cable internet then I would say go for that, otherwise ADSL is a more secure option because if you move your living location you do not have to buy an ADSL modem if your new place does not have a Cable line. Cable and ADSL modems are the pieces of equipment that your home computers connect to, to use the internet, the modems connect to your ISP through the cable or home phone line, modems can cost anywhere from $100 to $300 for a good one.
